Rhythm, tempo, arrangement, atmosphere, but also your own tastes and preferences determine which dance you do on the music. Ultimately, you decide that thus yourself.
Pleasant rhythms are according to researchers between 70 and 110 BPM.
The average music tempo increased from 1920 to 1960, and then about 30 years approximately remain the same. The last decade of the 20th century was a bit slower, to accelerate (U.S. average) from 2000 again. In a line plotted increases the BPM of 80 in 1900 to 100 in 2009. In the war years, the pace slowed again.
